SAFEGUARDING GUIS:
BEST PRACTICES USING MULTIPLE LAYERS OF IP, INCLUDING DESIGN PATENTS,
UTILITY PATENTS, COPYRIGHT AND TRADE DRESS

Robert S. Katz will join Michael Hsu, patent counsel at Adobe Systems in San Jose, Calif., and Robert Lord, a partner at Osha Liang in Houston, in the Intellectual Property Owners Association webinar panel discussion, “Safeguarding GUIs: Best Practices Using Multiple Layers of IP, Including Design Patents, Utility Patents, Copyright and Trade Dress,” on Thursday, April 23.

During the webinar, Mr. Katz and his fellow panelists will discuss how best to protect Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) using multiple layers of intellectual property. Design patents became a popular method after Apple’s success in enforcing a GUI design patent against Samsung, but continue to face challenges over how crowded the field is with prior art and how quickly the pace of design changes during product development. Utility patents that protect the functionality of GUI face their own challenges, particularly after the CLS Bank v. Alicedecision. Copyrights and trade dress could help fill the gap left in protection.
